2009 Latin American Experience Gala
Las Mujeres del Arte Latinoamericano
Chaired by Mary Cullen and co-chaired by Jack Moriniere and Kristi Schiller, the 2009 gala honored Las Mujeres del Arte Latinoamericano, the great ladies of Latin American art, a group of dealers who have worked to promote an international appreciation of modern and contemporary Latin American art.
The gala coincided with the opening of the exhibition North Looks South: Building the Latin American Art Collection, which featured more than 80 works of art organized around the themes of Kinetic and Op art, Constructivism, Surrealism, Latin Pop, installation art, and contemporary video. In addition, the exhibition featured several works from the renowned Adolpho Leirner Collection of Brazilian Constructive Art, acquired by the MFAH in 2007.
The evening included a live and silent auction of Latin American works of art, a seated dinner by City Kitchen, and performances by Edilson Lima and his Brazilian dance group Samba 1, as well as tango dancer El Pulpo. The $700,000 raised at the gala benefited the Latin American Art Department. View the auction catalogue.
