2011 Latin American Experience Gala
The 2011 gala, chaired by Dr. Luis Campos and Mrs. Mary Lile, auctioned off a variety of modern and contemporary works and celebrated two exhibitions of Latin American art: Cosmopolitan Routes: Houston Collects Latin American Art and Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time.
Opening in October 2010, Cosmopolitan Routes celebrated the remarkable Latin American artworks in local collections, often purchased under the guidance of the MFAH. Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time, which opened in conjunction with the Latin American Experience weekend in February 2011, was the first large-scale retrospective of the artist who is recognized as one of the most influential and significant of the 20th century.
Also unique to the 2011 celebration was El Encuentro, an “art-fair” style environment where gallerists from all over Latin America had the opportunity to set up booths in order to provide information and promote the artists and works they represent. The weekend's kick-off event was a celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the Latin American Art Department at the MFAH.
The evening of February 5 included a live auction conducted by Sotheby’s and a seated dinner by City Kitchen, with performances by Carlos Cruz-Diez’s Chromatiques and the Dallas-based band Havana NRG. More than $1.2 million was raised to benefit the Latin American Art Department.
