2013 Latin American Experience Gala

The Latin American Experience Gala and Auction brings together collectors, galleries, and patrons from throughout Latin America to celebrate the accomplishments of the Latin American Art Department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

In 2013, the gala coincided with the opening of the exhibition Antonio Berni: Juanito and Ramona, the first major international exhibition to offer a comprehensive view of the Argentinean master's groundbreaking achievements in the media of assemblage and printmaking. The exhibition focused on Juanito Laguna and Ramona Montiel, two fictitious characters around which Berni made his most radical and creative work from the 1950s through the 1970s.

The 2013 event chairs were Eugenia and Eduardo Grüneisen, with honorary chair Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier, and gala advisors Sofia Adrogué and Brad Bucher. The MFAH was delighted to welcome a very large showing of international guests to Houston for the event. Throughout the weekend, out-of-town guests also enjoyed visiting local galleries and private collections, attending several events at the MFAH, and listening to immerging artists speak about their work featured in the auction.

The evening of November 9 included a silent auction, live auction conducted by Jamie Niven of Sotheby’s, seated dinner by City Kitchen, and dancing to Dallas-based band Havana NRG. A special performance by Yamil le Parc, William Sabatier, and Diego Trosman was also a welcome addition to the evening.  More than $1.28 million was raised to benefit the Latin American art department.
